  • Tell Your Story Drum Making
Picture
Picture
Debby Wohlmut & Connie Hill are teaming up for a project that will bring together healing work, looking at our stories and making a drum as a project to apply for an "Awesome Project" grant. We will incorporate painting, drawing, writing, collage work and various aspects of our healing stories on the inside of the drums we will complete.

To the left, the upper picture is a section of the inside of Debby's grief drum that she made after her husband's death.

Below Debby's picture is Connie's process of looking at her work with  "becoming visible." This will also go on the inside of a drum.

OUR PROJECT: The stories we tell about ourselves become the source of our well-being or not so well being. It is also important to witness and be witnessed through this process. This is what creates validation and dispels the feeling of invisibility, that so many of us experience these days. This project allows participants to tell their story in a creative and safe environment, which allows each individual to feel validated, heard and honored.
The final outcome of this project will be that each participant will walk away with his or her own hoop drum and beater that they have created to represent their personal story. In drum lore, each drum created has a voice and carries the energy of the person who created it. When played, the drum sends that energy out to the world.
During this several-session process, each participant will:
* In the first sessions, participants will vision their story and start to become clear with their story and how they want it represented inside their drum
* In the later sessions, they will place that story on the drum hoop in their own individual way. Participants will create the drum by stretching hide over the hoop and create the beater
*We will also make a rattle to be used to "paint your new picture"

* In the final session, the participants will gather to show their drum, tell their story and drum.

This workshop will help a growing number of Portlanders go through their healing journey by telling their personal story. When the drum is finished, our hope is that, the participants will continue that journey by either drumming by themselves or in groups to send that energy into the world. It is our vision that this workshop will be expanded in the future to making rattles, shields and staffs.

Connie Hill's work is about helping people with their transitions using astrology, coaching, drumming and spiritual tool making (drums, rattles, altars, shields, so on). She has been making drums, teaching drum making, and leading drumming circles for more than 30 years. Also, she has lead ceremonies and rituals to help people make changes and see what comes next.  Before beginning her practice she worked for 15 years for New Renaissance Bookshop coordinating their event's program. and she is also a Reiki Master.

Debby Wohlmut has been a Reiki Master since 1990 and has been working with drums, drum making and drumming circles for close to 14 years. She is trained in Energy Psychology and has incorporated those techniques in her sessions, circles and daily life. The idea for this workshop came out of Debby’s own story. She is a recent widow and found the deep grief of that transition to be overwhelming at times. She decided that she needed a vessel that could hold that grief and pain outside of her
